Reiki: rei "universal life" ki "energy" originated in Tibet

Reiki is an ancient Tibetan healing, empowerment and self-development therapy which was rediscovered late last century by a Japanese scholar, Dr Mikao Usui after he undertook many years extensive study of ancient Eastern healing texts.

The most meaningful modern interpretation of the word Reiki is: "spiritually guided Life-Force energy". Life-Force energy exists in every aspect of Nature and is known by various names such as: Ki; Chi; Prana; Orgone; Vital-Force.  All Healers access the Life-Force energy 'Ki'. However, 'Rei' describes the universally limitless aspect of this energy. Reiki, therefore, is a special kind of Life-Force energy which can only be channelled by someone who has been attuned to it by a Reiki Master.

Once the Reiki has been activated, the Reiki channel then has the ability to radiate this gentle, nurturing energy through the hands. It is understood to promote healing on all levels: physical; mental/emotional and spiritual and is recognised as a powerful tool for personal growth and transformation as it promotes intuitive, cognitive and creative processes and has physiological and psychological aspects similar to Meditation.

It is simple and easy to use as it is activated whenever the hands are placed on anything with the intent to heal. The Reiki energy flows automatically and needs no direction from the channel. It has its own intelligence and will direct itself to where it is most needed. It does this by connecting with the individual's Higher Self.

Reiki can be used on its own or to complement other conventional or alternative treatments. It is used within the medical or paramedical systems as it is an excellent adjunctive emergency tool for trauma and can easily be used while patients continue with orthodox medical treatment. Because it enhances the body's basic vitality, it has the potential to facilitate the rate of healing.

There are no pre-requisites required for the initial Reiki attunement and it does not require a change of lifestyle or belief system. Reiki is not a religion or a cult. It is not a form of mind control or hypnosis. It is not a form of psychic healing, nor is it a form of massage. It is a safe, gentle and easy to use technique which encompasses a special kind of healing power; and adults and children of all ages can be attuned to the Reiki and enjoy its life-long benefits.

Reili has five ethical principles handed down by Dr Usui and further promoted by the two Grand Masters who followed him: Dr Hayashi and Mrs Takata. It was these two who helped to spread Reiki throughout the world.

The five ethical principles of Reiki are:

  1. " Just for today, I will not be angry"
  2. " Just for today, I will not worry"
  3. " Just for today, I will do my work honestly"
  4. " Just for today, I will count my blessings and show gratitude for what I have"
  5. " Just for today, I will show respect for all living things"
Reiki First Degree
Reiki I training is undertaken by attending a workshop. All the information pertaining to the origins and history of Reiki is covered, as well as the techniques of basic hand positions needed to perform a full body treatment on oneself and others. Participants are given ample time to practise these techniques in a relaxing environment.

During the workshop the Reiki Master individually gives each participant a series of four attunements which strengthens the link between the initiate and the Universal Life-Force. These initiations are the only way that the healing channels can be opened, empowering the individual with Reiki energy for life.
